When you're creating your photography business and/or photography website portfolio, it is important for you to establish branding elements. Establishing a brand is more than creating a logo, it's choosing visual elements that correspond with your values and ensure consistency throughout.
Don't think about it too hard, though, because categorizing and creating patterns is human instinct. You've probably created a theme for your brand without even trying. Plus, websites have hundreds built-in themes just waiting for you to plug your information and content into...you're bound to find something that reflects your branding.
Still, the psychology of color is worth taking a deeper look into. You should be aware that, whether intentional or not, the colors you choose communicate different meanings to the viewer.
I've used this chart before, but I'm bringing it back because it's great.
So, what do your colors say about you? Well, as far as Lightbox goes, we fit into the gray section because our colors are black and white. So, our brand reflects balance, neutrality, and calmness. The goal with our branding was to illustrate a modern company, honoring minimalism and sophistication. So, you could say that our branding says, "Don't fret. We are here for you as a high quality educational resource." And we're good with that.
My final advice is make sure that there is no disconnect between what you want your colors to say and what your colors are actually communicating to viewers. It may seem superficial, but color definitely effects your appearance as a professional.
